A few months back we spent some time in Coastal Crew's Sunshine Coast backyard. We turned the cameras on them and filmed a day in their life and what inspires their ride. Their amazing surroundings and their upbringing in that environment make what they create as rad as it is.

 Great to see little behind the scenes glimpses of what makes these guys tick. Interview with his dad was a nice touch and he seems like a great guy. Can definitely tell why these guys seem so down to earth and grounded.

Much respect for these guys as always, and of course, Coastal Crew shreds!

 That was a cool video. Different than the usual. So let me ask you guys these questions:

This is the kind of story that's happening in many small town BC gems. They get discovered. You guys (the guys who grew up there) get priced out. "Millionaires" move in - prices jack up. There's not a whole pile of work in the SSC unless you create your own work so what's the answer to this problem? Is it even a problem or is it just evolution and get over it hippy?

Just remember that, to take one example, when I first started riding here North Van was kind of sleepy. Not many people rode in the early 90s and if you bumped into someone you'd probably know them. Houses cost about 200k. So is North Van the future of the Coast or will the ferry ride save you?

 That's Vancouver Island in a nutshell right there. I was born here, and have watched everything go from rarely meeting people that have moved onto the island to everyone you meet being from other places. It's changed a lot over the last 30 years : (

 it's too bad this big city people flush to the small town, it happens all sorts of small towns, happened to my hometown with an invasion of californians. the only nice thing is that my family was far enough out of town, and didn't really get bought out around us as the forest service has a border on 3 sides of the property, so we built small, and plan to keep it that way to likely try to keep the land in the family or back to the forest service. I hope that places like that can stay sane, and as is. I think that the line between self-sufficiency and being a hippy are now pretty blurred. there are definite hippies, but then there are dudes like that who milled his own lumber, which is a hell of a lot of work, and constructing buildings out of simple timber and nails with minimal help is impressive, and deserves respect. I'm in the process of building a log cabin, and that house he made was superb from the view provided.

 Here's something for you guys to consider...

Would you rather see people generally moving into the city or out to the country?

I'm not saying get over it hippy, far from, but give it some more though.... sounds more like resentment than constructive criticism to me.

 I support people moving out to the country when they are moving because they like the mindset of the place they're going. But what i am talking about are people moving there and trying to change the mindset of certain small communities rather than trying to fit into what's already going on there. People moving to small places and trying to make them more like cities, with city mindsets. On Vancouver Island there is a very blurred line between country and city... it's not as black and white here as country and city...

 Exactly, there is a huge difference from the folks who want to move somewhere and if opposed or have other wants, acquiesce into the culture already implanted or move somewhere that has a mindset similar to that persons current view, versus those who move and try to bring their culture to the new environment. I don't care where people move, it's about how they move...

 I know this is a bit of a dead issue but I'm reminded of some pretty funny examples.

1. Bowen Island commuters who wanted peace and quiet on the weekend so lobbied for no noise bylaw for the entire weekend. Kind of a bummer for someone who lives there full-time and happens to want to chainsaw some wood on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

2. There used to be rope swings in lynn canyon and mosquito creek where we'd use them to swing off them and swandive into pools. Some new people moved in close by and complained there were too many kids laughing and having fun and said it was unsafe (yeah it probably wasn't safe but whatever.. we were kids and a few smacks to the head ain't gonna kill us). Those rope swings disappeared - removed by bylaw officers.

3. Howabout the gumbies who moved into houses in valleycliffe in squamish and complained because there were too many skanky climbers and bikers passing through the neighbourhood. Yup - using the same trails and bluffs that existed long before those houses went up. Note the trails weren't on the land of those people. Thankfully council told them to get lost

Not a rant - just more of an observation. Hope no-one moves to the bottom of Roberts Creek and starts complaining because there's too much traffic up and down the road on bike or vehicle.

 Inspring and engrossing to see the "old man" responsible for the nurturing the talent up there. I'm left reminded and thinking of my dad and granddad, and this makes me miss them. Thanks for the outstanding work and the chance to think about my own roots while I enjoy yours.

 amazing video. I comprehend what it's like to be in that old man's shoes. The beauty of having your own piece of Heaven to ride and live among nature comes at the price of endless days of toil, multiplied by the fact that you're doing it almost all on your own. I hope when my boys get old enough to ride the big stuff at our place that they will appreciate the history that is behind our own story.
