RockShox BoXXer Keronite - First Look

Pinkbike's Keronite® BoXXer has already been un-boxed and installed on our test bike so expect some riding impressions soon from this uber-light fork soon, but there is plenty to talk about in the meantime. Yes, the fork is lighter due to its high-tech Keronite® coating, but there is plenty more to the story than the grams that have been shed. Not only have their been updates to the Mission Control damper assembly, the fork's entire Solo Air spring has been reworked for more sensitivity and durability over the long haul - something that both racers and riders alike should be able to appreciate. The 2011 RockShox BoXXer Keronite

The passion for racing has always been the inspiration for RockShox engineers to develop new exciting products. Since its introduction in 1996 the BoXXer has won over 10 elite downhill World Championships and more than 66 World Cup races. Fuelling this passion while exploring the limits, the world’s best riders like Sam Hill, Myles Rockwell, Steve Peat and Greg Minnaar have been propelled to fame with advanced technology–like special long-travel DH air spring systems. Beyond the light new finish, this grey uber-fork is now more responsive on small bumps creating a bike that will stay more steady and stable thanks to design updates to the Mission Control DH damper. The increased responsiveness improves traction and front wheel guidance, largely credited to the redesigned rebound piston valve that has enhanced performance and function to provide increased bike control for the rider. Tool-free tuning: No tools are needed for on-trail adjustments thanks to repositioned knobs on the upper side of the fork legs. The rider can easily tune the compression for the high speed mode (in 18 clicks) and for the low speed adjustment (14 clicks). No World Cup mechanic necessary-just ride, change the clicks and ride again until you go fast.

It sounds like they might have been better of using this on the stanchions instead of the lowers (for the wear characteristics)

The World Cup gets even better. I don't really care about the 30 grams (although it does all add up) but if it actually is more reliable and has better damping then it may be worth while. Mine hasn't had any issues but I don't see how it being more sensitive could be a bad thing.

2. Take off a knob from the top (30g)
3. Buy a chicken for $5 from the grocery store
4. Take the cartilage (contains kerotine) out and spread it all over your fork

Anyone remember the marzocchi 55 triple in decline a while back? Claimed weight was 5.5lbs or 2,500 grams...Which would make it lighter than this...But it's not in production. Just throwing it out there. And that's without any special coating...Maybe a sub-5lb DH fork in the future? I wouldn't run it, but I could see it happening

The Boxxer is nice. I dont really understand all the hate. I think its sick, and If somebody sent one my way I would prob hang it off the front of my bike. Its a racing fork, not for everyone- ill admit, but sick nonetheless. Dont hate Boxxer WC because she's beautiful.

Keronite is an -aftermarket- process in the aerospace industry only, it is not 'commonly used', nor is it widely approved (yet). Maybe Rockshox's marketing team can be used to sell this coating to all the OEM's lol! I work in said industry, and the primary use for it in the coming years will be for durable anti-corrosion coat for (especially) magnesium cases in rotary industry....where corrosion is a huge factor in getting life out of components. It is an alternative to anodizing on some applications (and it's cheaper!), and hopefully in the future a replacement for Rockhard coating technology that is used widely for magnesium protection. Just a note, Keronite is commonly used with a durable top coat. Sooo....... Rockshox has applied a durable primer (just kidding:-).

I got to ride the 2010 Boxxer World Cup and though it was absolutely terrible, and completely let down the rear suspension of the test bike (2011 Devinci Wilson SP) which was simply amazing

the Boxxer Team (now R2C2) was much better than the World Cup I rode

30 grams meh! it'll make up for the extra short post mounting points that require after market post mounts and the associated hardware to run 8 inch rotors. what, they didn't think people would notice that they cheated the weight savings by pretending there are actually folks who would run a 6 inch rotor on the fork of a DH bike?

Well until RockShox will not stop this flexible shits called boxxer and will not make a useable STIFF and PLUSH fork, for an average freerideer too, who don't want to service it after every 1,5-2 months of ride - and of course he can use it for at least 3 years (without buying a new one, becouse the eggsells broken...), i will stick with my old 2006 Marzocchi 888 RC2X - becouse it still laughts on every of the boxxers why the only fact is RELIABILITY and of course the huge break power difference (I had 2002 Boxxer WC, and 2008 Boxxer Team, and i testet for a month 2011 Boxxer Team) - and i hate all of them, sorry RockShox but you make the worst suspension in the market, sorry you lost someone who loved you at the start (2002 WC Factory Rebound fail, but otherwise it was a good fork, 2004-2005 number of my friend factory oil leaking from oil seals, and broken leggs, 2008 Flexible shit, very fast wearing bushings - with costly services oil leaking from compression side gate valve, eggshells which brake so fast, and another big number of costly services, the 2011 was better but still not enough stiff)... Hopefully i didn't use RockShox Eggshells more - so my motivation came back finally, when i was almost stop what i love so much...

i am very interested in dlc stanchions too, if dlc is as good as i think it is, boxxers should become marzo style butter smooth. now if only they reworked lowers or tucked the damper a couple of inches higher in the stanchion so it could accomodate more oil...

I tried the 2011 Boxxer WC a few days ago. Was not convinced it was any better than my 2010 ones. Might have been because the fork was new compared to my 2010 Boxxer WC (mine were serviced a month ago, so many many hours of riding on them), but it had more stiction at 70psi than I had when I was running 80psi a week ago (I run 62/5psi most of the time as I am under 12st).

Always a bit of stiction when they're new. A good tune up is always needed to get them to feel right. Ride a couple of days on it, then service it completely with motorex.
